About Sutton State Forest

Sutton State Forest is a 2,300-acre expanse located in Worcester County, Massachusetts, spanning portions of the towns of Sutton and Millbury. This largely undeveloped forest is characterized by mixed hardwood and conifer stands, wetlands, and small streams contributing to its rich biodiversity. The forest lies within the Blackstone River watershed, offering important wildlife habitat and natural water resources. Established in 1914, it provides a quiet outdoor experience with over 40 miles of multi-use trails including sections of the popular Blackstone River Greenway and the historic Mid-State Trail. Visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. The terrain ranges from gentle hills to rugged areas with rocky features and scenic overlooks, making it a favored destination for both casual visitors and outdoor enthusiasts. The forest is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and supports wildlife such as white-tailed deer, turkeys, and various bird species. No developed campgrounds are located within the forest itself, but nearby state parks offer camping opportunities. Its proximity to Boston and Worcester makes Sutton State Forest accessible for day trips, offering a natural refuge and scenic trails away from urban centers.
